AF018: Hulder: De Oproeping Van Middeleeuwse Duisternis
Last year, with only a demo and a rehearsal tape launched under her raven-black banner, Hulder went to war with modern black metal conventions and expectations. Over the course of two unexpected tapes, all who wandered within earshot of Hulder’s unique yet true-sworn black metal were converted to supplicants, or to ash.
Hulder’s first battle was the release of Ascending the Raven Stone, a three song demonstration of her dread powers. Blood magic-charged and tremolo-picked medieval riffs warp the decrepit atmosphere; The Inquisitor’s enraged howls rise up from tape hiss like from the depths of an ancient, long-brooding hatred.
Then, not more than a month later, Hulder released her now highly coveted rehearsal tape, titled simply 8/13/18, during which she recorded a cover of “Into the Crypts of Rays,” plus re-recorded three rippers from her demo. Executed with a violent urgency, Hulder’s August 2019 rehearsal plays out like a hostile fulfillment of her initial warning.
Now, Our Ancient Future compiles both Hulder recordings onto one cassette tape, De Oproeping Van Middeleeuwse Duisternis. As Hulder shows zero indication of relenting, this compilation will prove mandatory in the coming years for those who worship the likes of early Satyricon, Mayhem, Black Cilice, and anything that impales the psyche with raw malice.
